MMV/Thailand — Thai mainstream media is now in a difficult situation and facing challenges from all directions which is forcing them to undergo major reform or otherwise risk losing their leading position in public space. Their freedom, credibility and accountability are now being questioned by the whole of society. who expect to see the media perform their function professionally and honestly.
.
Political conflict over the past five years, since a group of people calling themselves the People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) took to street protests in early 2006, has posited its consequence on Thai media. Since the PAD protests, some of the media began to subscribe to partisan journalism, acting as a mouthpiece for the group’s political propaganda, rather than reporting professionally.
.
Media who joined the band wagon exploited the protest movement to launch their revenge on the then Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, whose five years in office posed a significant threat to media’s freedom of expression. Many Thai media practitioners faced harsh libel law suits with demands of huge amounts of compensation beyond their ability to pay. Thaksin used money laundering law to scrutinize some media executives and senior journalists. Thaksin’s cronies withdrew advertisements from many media outlets whose owners refused to comply with the then government line.

The PAD, a loose coalition of media tycoons, royalists, urban middle class, and the intellectual elite, in cooperation with the military, managed to topple Thaksin’s government in a military coup in September 2006. But the regime change was not the end of the story, as die-hard Thaksin refused to perish from the political scene. His Thai Rak Thai party was dissolved by the military junta-backed constitutional court in 2007 but Thaksin formed a new proxy, the People Power Party, which later won a victory in the 2007 election and ran the government under late Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej and later his brother-in-law Somchai Wongsawat.

Bangkok’s elite has never given in. The PAD began its ‘Episode II ‘ using street protests again to topple Thaksin’s proxy. They seized the Prime Minister’s Office for six months and the Suvarnnabhumi airport stranding 300,000 passengers for a week in late 2008. Judicial activists dissolved Thaksin’s proxy party and the other two coalition parties in the then government, using the charge of electoral fraud. This enabled break away politicians to form their new political parties and pour support into Abhisit Vejjajiva’s Democrat Party to form the current cabinet which has run the country since December 2008. The new government was established with strong support from the military.

Now it is Thaksin’s turn to take to street battles against the ruling government. His supporters tagged along forming a group comprised of the rural and urban poor who like his populist policies, progressive intellectuals and social activists who are against the military’s role in politics, as well as ex-communist insurgents, banded together to form the red shirted movement under the name of the United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD). They have raised many significant issues in Thai politics ranging from the fundamental principle of democracy, justice and injustice, social inequality and some sense of ‘class struggle’. They accused the elite and the palace through the king advisors of manipulating politics to bring down their elected government.

The mainstream media have taken their position along the same line as the elite, reporting mostly the government’s agenda against the red shirted protesters. Media has oversimplified the protesters, portraying them as Thaksin’s lackeys who are fighting to bring back their big boss who is now in exile, running away from a two year jail term on the charge of corruption and abuse of power.

Daily media headlines are closer to political expressions and statements, rather than regular news headlines used to highlight a story. In many cases, the headline has simply been a scolding to the rural poor for disturbing and later destroying Bangkok’s life. Many newspapers labeled the red shirts as street thugs, some subscribed to the government’s line calling them ‘terrorists’ while some compared them with animals such as the water buffalo which is equivalent to being called stupid, and the monitor lizard which is an insult in Thai culture. Reporting of the red shirt protests is absolutely far from being a fair tale. Rumor and disinformation which paint negative pictures of Thaksin are very common in mass media. Thaksin was reported dead many times by Thai media despite the former Prime Minister phoning into the protest site showing that he was still alive.

It is important to note that the current government uses state-run media outlets, mostly television and radio, as its political tool to build public consent and sentiment against the red shirt protesters.

The red shirts had no choice but to open their own media outlets through print, satellite television and new media, via the Internet and mobile phone, which are mostly now banned. Hardware was no big deal for Thaksin who is a former telecommunications tycoon, but the content on Red media was nothing more than a mouthpiece for the protesters. In fact, the protesters’ media such as the People’s Channel better known as P-TV is a replica of of the Yellow Shirt PAD’s ASTV, which functions as a propaganda machine for the political movement, rather than as mass media. During the marathon protest in Bangkok and major provinces, the P-TV has carried nothing more than live broadcasting of the protest activities to their red shirt wearing audiences. Supporters and sympathizers of red shirted groups strongly criticized the mainstream media for its subjective and imbalanced coverage. This was also a reason why some media outlets were under attack during the riot in May. The Red Shirt groups subsequently consumed only their own media and other like-minded media.

New technology in the telecommunications industry provides an alternative for people who are bored of mainstream media’s subjectivity and imbalanced reporting. Many people abandon mainstream newspapers, television and radio and turn to new media, notably the Internet. It is not so expensive for ordinary people to open a website which has the capacity to produce similar levels of information as mainstream media. The website can contain simple text, audio and video, with unlimited content. Some outlets require no investment. It allows individuals to have channels to promote their own content.. It takes a few minutes to set up an e-mail account, face book and twitter which then links to a large group of people interactively. With internet and new media, people don’t need to rely on news and information from mainstream media anymore.

During the protests in Thailand over the past years, people have put a lot of information, news, audio and video clips, relating to the proteston the internet to exchange information among themselves, and sometime to counter mainstream media which they believe is siding with their opponent. These groups of people called themselves ‘cyber warriors’ and use the internet in their information and disinformation warfare.

Many taboo issues within the Thai context, such as the monarchy, have had a chance to surface into public space in this cyber world. Any issue that is unable to be reported in mainstream media can be found in the cyber world. The issue is increasingly raised these days in Thailand, since the palace has been accused of siding with elite groups to manipulate the politics against the protesters. Many people were arrested on the charge of Lese Majeste in connection with posting ‘defamation’ of the monarchy on the internet. Thai mainstream media has exercised self-censorship on the issue of the monarchy in order to avoid the risk of the Lese Majeste charge too. They mostly have refrained from reporting the cases of Lese Majeste, where many people including foreigners have been arrested and put into jail with media silence.

The current government exercised its tough power to shut down the protesters-related media. It used many draconian laws including criminal law, the internal security act, computer law and emergency law to control media which was considered to be a threat to national security.
Many things could be regarded as a threat to national security. Supporting the red shirted protest, criticism of government and talking about the monarchy could be considered as a threat to national security.

The government so far has shut down more than 50,000 websites including pornography and anti-monarchy sites. The authority did not close any mainstream media since they have already exercised self-censorship or reported in favor of the government agenda.
Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, in his five-point road map for national reconciliation to end the political crisis, proposed a media reform process, but no detail has been mapped out. He basically aimed to stop media being ‘provocative’ – notably among media that act as the mouth-piece of political groups, as well as state-run media.
Media activist groups including the Thai Journalist Association in their open letter to the

Prime Minister urged the government to reform and restructure state-run media. They called on the government to issue an organic law to guarantee freedom and protect ‘professional media—the term which needs a clear definition–’ from being used by political movements to create conflict and hate amongst the population. They also urged media fellows to strictly follow the profession’s ethical guidelines to stop disinformation, hate, conflict and violence. The group offered themselves as a coordinator for the process of media reform.

In fact, Thai media has undergone many reforms throughout history. The main idea driving the reform is to ensure media is independent from political and business domination. The reform process so far however has merely pushed the media to go back and forth between the domination of political and business groups.

After the ‘Bloody May’ incident in 1992, some media outlets managed to get out from under state (notably military) domination, but unfortunately they fell under business domination. The 2006 coup seemed to end business domination in some media—at least one television station TV Thai formerly ITV—but many of them voluntarily returned to domination of the authorities.

The main question these days for media reform in Thailand is how to ensure it is really independent from all kind of domination.

…….

In 1996, three Latin Americans wrote a best-selling book in Spanish which was later translated into English as Guide to the Perfect Latin American Idiot. Their main contention is that Latin American problems are not caused by outside influences as Latin Americans generally believe. Rather, they result mainly from actions of Latin Americans themselves. Correcting Latin American problems, therefore, must come from Latin Americans.

Ask Thais about the causes of last week’s shameful events — or of any problems in Thailand for that matter — and they will readily point finger somewhere else, never at themselves. I am a Thai so I am part of this well-practiced response. But I now believe that if we continue with this long-running charade of self-deception, Thailand is on its way to becoming a failed state shortly.

We present Thailand as the land of smiles full of gentle Buddhists. We regularly give alms to monks and often make donations to temples, believing that those are selfless acts for the welfare of others. Deep down, however, we do that only because we wish to get something in return – to go to heaven or have a richer next life. It is a trade, pure and simple, nothing kind or selfless about it. Few of us give for the sake of giving. We are basically very selfish.

Every time we go to the temple or attend a Buddhist ceremony, we duly accept and recite the Five Precepts as a guide to our daily lives; but we leave them there, as we always make promises without ever intending to keep them. Actually, we understand little about Buddhism. Even among the ranks of the monks, most do not know the teachings in-depth and lead their lives accordingly — all they know is how to conduct ceremonies from which they earn easy income. This reflects something deeper — we are generally lazy and like to take short-cuts to the “sabai” (do-nothing) state. Lottery tickets, therefore, always sell out at premium prices; prostitution is rampant and young women readily marry foreign pensioners.

We love to talk but rarely listen. Even when we do, we often fail to hear, as we never learn to think critically. We cannot put up with different points of view nor can we work cooperatively. Many of the over 30,000 Buddhist temples were built next to one another because when we disagreed with one, we just built another. That cooperative movement has never been successful here is another indication of our inability to tolerate different points of view.

We readily forgive, so we believe, as our most common utterance is “mai pen rai” (it doesn’t matter) when someone makes a mistake. But that is only a reflection of the culture of indifference and ready rationalization. We can always cite a well-known proverb, a famous poem or a sage’s sharp utterance to justify everything we do.

We complain so much about corruption. But we do little about it. Worse, we keep electing the same corrupt politicians because they have money and influence from which he hope to benefit. Survey after survey shows that the majority of us do not mind corruption as long as we get something out of it. One of the surveys last year showed that almost 85% of us believed that cheating was a normal business practice, making us practically a nation of thieves. When I raised the matter in this column, I received the angriest responses from fellow Thais, using expressions so colorful that they should not be printed nor uttered within earshot of other humans.

This long-running self-deception has created so much moral deficit, to employ Joseph Stiglitz’s terminology, that has put Thailand into a state of moral crisis for some time now. Some of the symptoms of this state are the economic crisis of 1997 and the protests culminating in last week’s events. Of course, we will never admit this, for we are perfect and will continue to be very angry when a foreigner utters something non-complementary about us. But I do hope that the events of last week shock most of us into reexamining ourselves, our values, and start reducing the moral deficit as well as trying to generate some moral surplus: doing more genuinely voluntary work for the common good similar to the street cleaning carried out by Bangkokians last weekend, but on a regular basis.

Who is the most lazy blogger in the world? I know you do not know but I know that blogger. His name is Kosol Anusim, the owner of Kosolanusim.com and he post his blog every three months, absolutely indolent man.

One day while he was sitting on the chair in the room in his house, looking at monitor and thinking about things he would write for his blog. He had no idea and wanted someone give him guidance.

“Oh! God.” He prayed. “Please help me or send me someone to help me. I have to write a post of my blog today. It’s time to post but I have no idea, my brain is worst, I come to be a fool blogger. Help me please!”

Unbelievable! Suddenly, he just finished praying, a man appeared, splendid and smart strange man, near the door, looked at the blogger.

The blogger was shocked, and after that he got exciting. God heard him and sent this man to save him. Thanks God!

“You are a blogger, aren’t you?” The man asked the blogger.

“Yes, Yes sir.” The blogger answered “I’m a blogger. I’m Kosol Anusim and my blog is Kosolanusim.com.”

“I know you, I watch you and I read your blog” The strange man said. “You posted your last entry three months ago. Right?”

“Yes, yes sir.” The blogger replied and did not dare to face the strange man.

“Look at me, lazy blogger” The strange man said powerful loudly. The blogger turned around to him.

“That’s right.” The strange man said. “Do you need idea for your writing?”

“Yes, sir. I really need. I couldn’t write anything. I’m a fool now.”

“You aren’t a fool but you’re lazy. Laziness make people disgusting so you’re a disgusting blogger.” The strange man said.

The lazy, the most lazy blogger in the world kept silent. He though about the strange man’s opinions.

“I accept your blames, sir.” The blogger said.

“Good.” The strange man said. “You can be a good blogger, but have to quit your bad behavior. Won’t be lazy.”

“Yes, sir. I will.”

“Good, I keep your words and won’t forget it.” The strange man looked at the blogger. “Now you read this book, pages twelfth and thirteen, read it loudly.

The strange man sent a book to the blogger. The blogger never saw this book since the strange man get in. He wondered, got that book and read page twelfth.

“Read and keep reading. Don’t stop before you read the last sentence of page thirteen”

The blogger said nothing. He began reading the headline ;

“The Seven Habits of Highly Successful Bloggers”

And read the full article ;

1.They Blog On A Consistent Basis

Successful bloggers are not on again off again bloggers. They pick a posting frequency and they stick to it no matter what. If you’re going to do a new blog post everyday, then make sure you do a new blog post everyday. If you don’t think you can handle that level of posting, then pick a number that you can handle.

It is better to post once per week on a consistent basis than once per day and then nothing for a week after. If you’re new to blogging, I recommend you start with one to three posts per week and work up to a level that you’re comfortable with. You should always work up the post frequency and never work down. If you do have to work down, then do it very slowly.

2.They Are Passionate About Their Topic

If you’re not passionate about the topic you’re blogging about, then you’re going to have a really hard time growing the blog. Blogs attract like-minded people and they will see right through you if you’re just in it for the money.

Being passionate about what you blog about makes it easier to keep up with the industry – you want to find out what is happening in your niche because it’s your passion and not because it may make you money. I started this blog with no intention of making money from it. For the first eight months of the blog’s life, it made zero and its traffic was just a few hundred readers per day. Yet, I updated the blog an average of over two posts per day during that period. You cannot do that unless you are passionate about your topic.

3.They Interact With Their Readers

A blog is not a one-way street. In addition to providing information, a blog is a communication tool between the blogger and his readers. Successful bloggers interact with their readers. They answer reader emails and comments and they ask for feedback.

Interacting with your readers build trust and loyalty. It makes you more approachable. My biggest fear is some readers would place me so high on a pedestal that they are scare to approach me. By keeping my blog on a light note and having fun with my postings, I feel I connect with the readers on a more personal level.

4.They Give Out Lots Of Link Love

Successful bloggers don’t hoard their links. They don’t have a problem with linking to a PR0 blog. They put the concerns of their readers ahead of a Google ranking. If another blog has a good story or idea on the topics I cover, I don’t care what their PageRank is, I’m going to link to them.

Too many bloggers are caught up with SEO and link count. They only want high ranking blogs linking to them and won’t link to low ranking blogs. I’ve linked to hundred of brand new zero ranked blogs and who knows how many zero ranked blogs have linked to me. This blog is a PageRank 6. Some SEO guy told me if I would have been more careful about linking, I could have gotten a PageRank 7. My answer to that is, “People first, Google second.”

5.They Know How To Brand Themselves

Successful bloggers know how to brand. Branding will separate your blog from the millions out there. The most unique thing about your blog is not the topic you’re writing about. What makes your blog stand out? The answer is simple – you! Your ability to promote and brand yourself will separate your blog from the pack.

Very few blogs have ever gotten big without some kind of tier one level press coverage. This doesn’t mean you need to hit the front page of the New York Times. You can turn any coverage into brand building material. I’ll have more on this in a future post.

Branding is one of the reasons I tell all bloggers to get their own domain name instead of going with a free service like Blogspot. You want to brand yourself, not them. Can you imagine Guy Kawasaki with a URL of GuyKawasaki.blogspot.com?

6.They Are Good Writers

You do not have to be a great writer to have a successful blog but you do need to be good at getting your ideas across in an understandable manner. Most readers read blogs for information. They will forgive occasional grammar mistakes as long you can get your point across. If your readers are having troubling understanding what you’re trying to say then you need to improve your writing skills.

7.They Read John Chow dot Com

This is 100% true! Successful bloggers read other successful blogger’s blog. I check out all the big name bloggers everyday to see what they are talking about. You are never too big to stop learning.

“Oh!, I see. I know you. I know this book. This copy is mine, I downloaded and printed it for myself.” The blogger uttered and turned to the strange man but he saw nothing. The strange man disappeared. The blogger was shocked, after that, for a while, he smiled.

“You’re my God Blogger. I have your eBook but not read it. Thank you sir. Now I’m reading. I spend today to read it.”

The Blogger looked at the cover of the book. The big black letters says ;

“Make Money Online With John Chow dot Com”

One of my cats, Kane, four months old, male kitten chats with me very day. In the morning I open the door, Kane waits for me in front of the door.

“Hi, Papa”, the first sentence he says in every morning, “I’m hungry”

“So do I”, that’s my first sentence, “But cat first, human later. I bring you your meal. Come On guys and girls, time to eat.”

I feed my cats with cat food and tuna. There are four adults and three kittens. I talk to all of them. Tell the cats about their high food prices.

“Your food is too much to pay but I bought it for you. Don’t worry,if I have no money, your mommy, my wife, has more money than me. She will pay for you.”

Kane, talking and talkative cat likes to chat with me. I and Kane usually talk together in the morning and in the early night before my bedtime. The last night I read an Google Adsense book, Kane gave me a question.

“What are you reading Papa?,” He looked at the book in my hand, “What is the book saying”

“It says about Google Adsense” I replied

“What is Google Adsense?” Kane asked me. He has many questions to ask me very day.

“Ummm, I’ll try to tell you. Oh, I see. Google Adsense is a tool that help me make money. Google Adsense makes many people in the world rich. I want to be a rich man.”

“Why You want to be a rich man?”, the talkative cat said.

“A rich man has a lot of money, makes huge money. I want to make huge money too.”, I told the Cat.

“Why You want to make huge money Papa?,” he asked. Believe me that he has tons of question in stock.

“Errrr, Ummm, money makes you full. Money brings You best food. I don’t have money, You don’t have food.

The talkative cat jumped up on my chair and looked at me for awhile and said, “Papa ,make huge money, make huge money. I need more food. I wish you be a rich man.”, he said with seriously voice.

“O.K., Guy, I’ll try. Perhaps the Google Adsense make me rich in the year like some of rich people in the cyber world. I wish I rich, too.”

The Cat looked relaxedly. He jumped to the floor and cleaned himself by licking and then went out the door to spend his night time in outside.

That’s why You see Google Adsense on my blog. I just looking to find some ways to make more money, even a dime. The book told me that Google Adsense is a way to rich. The Answer is not blowing in the win, the book says.

We are the people of the Kingdom of Thailand and are citizens who are loyal to our nation, our religion, and our monarchy. We gather here today at Sanam Luang in the capital city of Bangkok and are joined in spirit and in faith by Thai citizens from across the Kingdom.
.
We come today to declare our purpose to everyone around the world, the following:
.
1. The Kingdom of Thailand is one kingdom that cannot and will not be divided. The people of Thailand have always been and continue to be loyal to our nation, our religion, and our monarchy. The Kingdom of Thailand is governed under a constitutional monarchy and will never be ruled by any other system because we, the people of Thailand, are prepared to protect our nation, our religion, our King, our independence, our sovereignty, and our national interests…we protect these institutions with our lives.
.
2. Fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra has been found guilty by the Supreme Court of Thailand for abuse of power and continues to flee and remain on the run. While he is hiding from the law, he is still wanted in many other corruption cases, but continues to create trouble and harm Thailand and its people, increasingly so that he has become the most wanted fugitive in the Kingdom’s recent history. Fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra will repay and return all assets that he has acquired through unjust means.
.
We, the people of Thailand, will continue to monitor and demand those assets until they are rightfully returned to Thailand.

3. We declare that Fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra has now become an enemy to the Kingdom of Thailand. He has become a traitor to his motherland by threatening Thailand’s national security and becoming an antagonist to Thailand’s constitutional monarchy. He has conspired with the enemy in undermining Thailand’s dignity.

It has been apparent throughout his years as a fugitive that Thaksin Shinawatra has tried his best to incite political and ideological separation among Thais nationwide and also between the Kingdom of Thailand and its neighbor, Cambodia…a conflict that will not only affect Thai citizens, but also holds repercussions for the people of Cambodia and the citizens of Southeast Asia as a whole.

4. We declare that the Kingdom of Thailand’s justice system is fair and just….a system that utilizes judicial, humanitarian, and compassionate philosophies in deliberating cases. While trying to disgrace and discredit Thailand’s judicial system around the world, Fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra uses that same judicial system to file lawsuits against others as well. He has now become the Kingdom’s most frequent plaintiff.

We condemn Fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra and Mr. Hun Sen for dishonoring the Kingdom of Thailand’s judicial system. In doing so, both have also insulted the people of Thailand in the most shameful way and, for this, should never be forgiven.

5. We declare that the Kingdom of Thailand and the Kingdom of Cambodia and its peoples remain friendly neighbors. We, therefore, call upon Mr. Hun Sen to cease his activities in conspiring with Fugitive Thaksin Shinawatra in turning Thailand into an enemy of Cambodia. Mr. Hun Sen should also immediately strengthen ties with Thailand and urgently act upon what is called for in Former King His Majesty Norodom Sihanu’s royal missive.

6. Following in our ancestors footsteps, we, the people of Thailand, continue to be at peace with our neighbors and the world. We are dedicated to cooperating with the peoples and governments of nations around the world in protecting world peace, human rights, and the wellbeing of mankind.

Our gathering today reflects a great deal about the current state of the Kingdom of Thailand. Our presence represents Thai citizens who remain devoted to protecting the honor and dignity of our nation, our King, and our constitutional monarchy as stipulated in the Kingdom of Thailand’s constitution.

Declared to those present here and around the world…November 15, 2009 at Sanam Luang, Bangkok, Kingdom of Thailand

With Heartfelt Respect and Peace

The People of Thailand
Who remain loyal to our nation, our religion, and our monarchy

………………….

People who love cats gather round to see Thai Phone Card I present in this entry. The used phone cards I bought from a small secondhand shop.

The cat in each card is Siamese cat. The first one is seal point cat ( in Thai : วิเชียรมาศ), traditional Siamese (Thai) and one of the oldest breeds of domestic cats. It’s beautiful and cute cat so many people need the seal point cat to be their pet.

The second one is Silver blue or Korat cat (in Thai : แมวสีสวาด หรือ แมวโคราช) one of the oldest breeds of Siamese cat and has been popular in the World.

Korat ( Nakhon Ratchasima) is a Province in North Eastern Region of Thailand. The silver cat is the native of Korat for long time ago.

Pictures of two cats in phone cards are not qualifiable. I don’t like both cards because its bad color but I love cat is the reason I bought.
